One moment we’re ripping agent Scott Boras or razzing Yankees fans about how they’ll deal with the subpar starting pitching they’ve gotten the first week of the season.

The next we’re getting news that reminds us that for the good and the bad of baseball, it is, at its core, nothing but sport. Wins and losses matter none at all when 22-year-old men and women just getting started in life die.

Accidents such as this happen every day to people known only to their families. Nick Adenhart gets a couple days in the spotlight because he was in the spotlight as a professional athlete.  In all cases it’s tragic when young people are killed just as their lives are getting started.

Here is a link to a story about Adenhart’s father Jim spending some time at the Angels’ ballpark in the hours following his son’s death.

Perhaps keeping in mind the Adenharts and the families of all such victims who will never be in the public eye would be a fitting way to start this holiday weekend. Peace.
